We Need the National Day of Prayer

Friday, April 16th, 2010

By: Don Bates Jr.

Demonstrating the extent to which some judges are willing to go in their attempt to legislate, and not simply interpret, a federal judge in Wisconsin ruled on Thursday that the National Day of Prayer is unconstitutional. The National Day of Prayer is an important part of our nation’s heritage and history, and must continue to be a part of who we are as a people. Since the very early days of our nation, calls to corporate prayer have been periodically made by both political and religious leaders.

During times of prosperity and uncertainty, during times of conflict and times of peace, prayer has steadied us and strengthened our resolve to do what is right and true. The founding generation did not intend to completely remove God from the public square when they placed the First Amendment in the Constitution. They firmly believed in the freedom of the individual to choose his or her own religion, and even choose no religion at all if they so felt. Their purpose was to prevent the state from forcing any citizen or group of citizens to adopt a specific religious creed. They recognized the hand of Providence in the events that led to the formation of our country, and they understood that it is appropriate for leaders to issue a call to prayer on behalf of our nation to all who wish to join in such an act.

If a higher court does not overrule the decision of this lone judge, and if this decision is allowed to stand, I support legislation removing the subject of proclamations by the President and governors calling citizens to prayer from the jurisdiction of the federal court system.

Don’s Closing Statement

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Don did a great job at the New Castle debate on Saturday.  The text and video of his closing statement are below, and they give you a feel for how the debate went.

There are two key things about this statement.  First, Don’s focus on renewing our nation and returning to the stand-tall style conservatism that generated respect for our country around the world, and significant economic growth here at home, is a message that needs to be communicated.  When we departed from those principles we ran into trouble, and returning to those principles will do much to solve the problems we face today. Second, Don’s pledge to serve only two terms in the Senate if elected is a pledge that other strong conservatives, such as Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, have made.  Don is a fresh voice articulating rock-solid conservative ideas, and this makes him attractive to Republicans around the state.

Transcript:

“I believe with all of my heart that the United States stands at a crucial crossroads. I believe down one path is a European socialist state; I believe down that other path is [ Ronald] Reagan’s shining city on a hill.

“If you will elect me to be your United States Senator I want to make you a promise – two promises: First of all, I am only going to serve two terms because I believe we’re way overdue for term limits. Secondly, if you elect me to be your United States Senator, I am going to do everything in my power to lock arms with great men like our congressman, Mike Pence, and I am going to do everything I can to lead the charge to Reagan’s shining city on a hill.

“And I’ll tell you how I know we’ve been successful: six years from now I’ll be able to look Amy, and Trae, and Blake in the eye – and I’ll be able to look you in the eye – and I’ll be able to say because we stood up in 2010 and made a difference, the United States of America is still the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
