About Don

The Bates Family

A 6th generation Hoosier, Don Bates Jr. was raised on a farm in Greensburg.  Today he resides in Winchester with his wife of fifteen years, Amy, and their two boys, Trae (13) and Blake (11).  From his earliest days, Don remembers being instilled with the values of hard work, honesty, and responsibility.  In 1987 he graduated from Bethel Holiness Christian School in Columbus, and then went on to earn his Th.B. at the Bible Missionary Institute in Rock Island, Illinois, graduating from there in 1991.

Unlike other candidates in the current U.S. Senate race, Don has never held elected office.  For a decade and a half he has worked in the business and financial services sectors.  His understanding of what it takes to help businesses grow and create jobs, and help families plan for the future, makes him uniquely qualified to tackle the problems of wasteful spending and runaway deficits in Washington.  Having worked to actually create jobs, Don knows that the conventional wisdom in Washington that says government must be the one that creates jobs is false.  Hard working men and women around the country are the ones who create, sustain, and fill jobs.

Don has served his community in a number of leadership positions.  Working as a board member of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement of Eastern Indiana, and the Starr-Gennett Foundation he has demonstrated his ability to work with people from across all sectors of a community to get a job done.  As a member of the local Rotary Club and Lions Club, he knows that individual citizens working together on the local level can achieve great things without the interference of the federal government.

In the wake of the 2008 election, Don took a serious look at where the country was headed.  Concerned about the future of the nation under the liberal leadership of President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Don decided it was time for him to step up to the plate and run for the United States Senate.  In talking about why he is running, he frequently mentions Ronald Reagan’s declaration that freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction and it is up to every generation to rise to the occasion and preserve liberty for its time.

Today as our nation stands at a crucial time, Don is running for Senate because he believes that Indiana needs a senator who will go to Washington and work for the pro-growth, less-spending, and pro-family policies that Hoosiers believe in.  As a husband and father, businessman and community leader, and concerned American citizen, he is prepared to stand up for freedom and stand up for Indiana.
