What Others Are Saying About Don

Monday, March 8th, 2010

On Saturday Don headed to Warsaw for a debate with the other four candidates.  This time the debate was hosted by a local tea-party group, and numerous press outlets covered the event, including a few radio stations that carried the debate live.  Don did a tremendous job of delivering a positive message focusing on what needs to be done to restore responsibility in Washington and preserve the American dream.

Here are some excerpts of what just a few media outlets are saying:

South Bend Tribune:

Bates said he would bring a practical business approach to Washington and spoke out against what he called out-of-touch career politicians.

“If we continue to send the same kind of politicians to Washington year after year, we can certainly expect the same results,” Bates said. “We must stop our government that is raising our taxes, invading our small businesses and family farms, nationalizing our health care and robbing us of our American dream,” Bates said.

Warsaw Times-Union:

Bates Jr. said free market principals are the secret to success, and encouraged a larger pool of people to be under the same health insurance policy so insurance premiums decrease.

Ft. Wayne Journal-Gazette:

Bates, a businessman, opened the debate by telling the crowd the men on the stage represented more than 50 years of political experience.

“I must say to you, I’m not responsible for a day of it,” he said. “I’m not a career politician.”

Wabash Conservative Union Blog:

“…he was interrupted quite a few times with applause—even though they were told to refrain from clapping.”

Team Bates is excited about the momentum that is building, and with your help, we will carry the primary in victory and head into the fall ready to turn this Senate seat from Blue to Red!

Don Pulls Strong in Warsaw Straw Poll

Monday, March 8th, 2010

As FoxNews reported, Don came in second for Kosciusko county votes in the straw poll after Saturday’s debate.  Why was this a strong showing?  Because part of the county is in Marlin Stutzman’s district, and he and one other candidate had home-turf advantage, having been able to mobilize a base of support that they have been building for months in that county.  The majority of Don’s support in the poll came from people at the debate who had no previous affiliation to our campaign.  The most ground gained by any campaign in that unscientific poll on Saturday was by Team Bates!

Indiana NewsCenter on Warsaw Debate

With five Republican Senate candidates all vying for airtime in the wake of Saturday’s debate in Warsaw, Don was able to get some key statements onto the air.  Take a look at this story from Indiana NewsCenter.

Don’s Closing Statement

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Don did a great job at the New Castle debate on Saturday.  The text and video of his closing statement are below, and they give you a feel for how the debate went.

There are two key things about this statement.  First, Don’s focus on renewing our nation and returning to the stand-tall style conservatism that generated respect for our country around the world, and significant economic growth here at home, is a message that needs to be communicated.  When we departed from those principles we ran into trouble, and returning to those principles will do much to solve the problems we face today. Second, Don’s pledge to serve only two terms in the Senate if elected is a pledge that other strong conservatives, such as Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, have made.  Don is a fresh voice articulating rock-solid conservative ideas, and this makes him attractive to Republicans around the state.

Transcript:

“I believe with all of my heart that the United States stands at a crucial crossroads. I believe down one path is a European socialist state; I believe down that other path is [ Ronald] Reagan’s shining city on a hill.

“If you will elect me to be your United States Senator I want to make you a promise – two promises: First of all, I am only going to serve two terms because I believe we’re way overdue for term limits. Secondly, if you elect me to be your United States Senator, I am going to do everything in my power to lock arms with great men like our congressman, Mike Pence, and I am going to do everything I can to lead the charge to Reagan’s shining city on a hill.

“And I’ll tell you how I know we’ve been successful: six years from now I’ll be able to look Amy, and Trae, and Blake in the eye – and I’ll be able to look you in the eye – and I’ll be able to say because we stood up in 2010 and made a difference, the United States of America is still the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

Primaries and Debates Matter

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

“I firmly believe that the current administration has launched an all-out assault
on the American dream.”
- Don Bates Jr. at the New Castle Debate

Primaries and the debates that go with them are an important part of the electoral process.  Unfortunately, Democrats in Indiana are not going to get a chance to have a primary because of Senator Bayh’s late announcement that he will not be running for re-election.  The filing deadline that passed hours after Senator Bayh’s announcement means that Democrat voters in Indiana will be forced to accept as their nominee whoever is chosen behind closed doors by the Democrat State Central Committee.

Team Bates is proud to be part of the exciting Republican primary race that is underway, and today’s debate at the Henry County GOP’s Lincoln Day Dinner in New Castle was the first debate between all 5 of the Republican senatorial candidates since the filing deadline earlier this month.  Last week, Indiana Republican Party Chairman Murray Clark noted the importance of the primary when he said, “we have five solid choices as we decide who best represents our party. Contrary to how some Democrats may portray it, we believe without reservation that a robust primary is good for Hoosiers and our party.”  He further said that the primary “[will] raise our profile and sharpen our operations” and “require the media and others to focus on our ideas and our vision.”

We agree with him.  The primary race gives not just Republicans, but all Hoosiers an opportunity to get to know each candidate better, and we feel the momentum building behind Don everywhere we go around the state.  Take a look at some of these articles talking about today’s debate:

Evansville Courier and Press – Note what one new supporter said about Don’s performance.
